Guidelines for a safe and peaceful campus

Published on 05-09-2024
Demonstrations have been announced at UvA locations for Friday, 6 September in the afternoon. This message is intended to provide you with more information about the demonstration and offer guidelines on how to deal with it. The UvA always aims to ensure that protests on campus are peaceful and that everyone continues to feel safe.

What is your study programme?

If you unexpectedly find yourself in an unsafe situation on Friday, you can call 020 525 2222. Help will be provided as quickly as possible.

At the UvA, everyone is free to demonstrate and make their voices heard - that is part of the university. But, of course, among the thousands of students and staff who study and work at the UvA, there are those who do not want to demonstrate, those who feel unsafe or unwelcome due to statements made by demonstrators, and those who have a different opinion. That diversity of views also forms part of the university.

It is a requirement, therefore, that the demonstration be peaceful and socially and physically safe for everyone on and near the campus. There is no place for intimidation, violence or vandalism, or preparing or inciting these behaviours.

Are you attending classes, studying or working on campus this Friday?

All education and research activities will continue. On campus you may receive instructions to help ensure that everything runs smoothly. Please follow them. If the demonstration unexpectedly results in unsafe situations on or around the Roeterseiland Campus, please leave the campus via the safe routes that are designated for this purpose. Follow the instructions of our security staff. If you do end up in an unsafe situation on Friday, you can call 020 525 2222. Help will be provided as soon as possible.

Are you demonstrating on the Roeterseiland Campus this Friday?

  • Make sure that you are clear on what the goals of the demonstration are, and how and with what means it will be conducted. Evaluate whether you support it. Make your own assessment carefully.
  • During the demonstration, monitor whether the content or manner of demonstrating changes, and continue to evaluate whether you support it.
  • If you notice that the demonstration is not (or no longer) peaceful, leave the demonstration. Do not stand by and watch. By being present at a non-peaceful demonstration, you are part of it and partly responsible for it.
  • If the demonstration unexpectedly results in unsafe situations on or around the Roeterseiland Campus, leave the campus via the safe routes that are designated for this purpose. Follow the instructions of our security colleagues.
