The new University Library combines modern study comfort with Amsterdam’s historical heritage. The building, originally a hospital, has been transformed based on thorough research and input from students.
Students expressed a preference for smaller study spaces rather than large halls and a surrounding environment filled with books. This feedback has been incorporated into the design. The Humanities collections will remain, maintaining the atmosphere of a traditional library.
Several study spaces have been created to ensure you always find a suitable place, tailored to your needs.
The Humanities collections from the Singel location and the P.C. Hoofthuis Library are moving to the new University Library. From mid-June, these collections will no longer be accessible or available for request. Plan ahead and borrow the books you need before mid-June. Borrowed books from the Humanities collections will be extended until the new University Library opens.
During the relocation period, you will be given an alternative collection location for requested material from the Book Depot or other locations. In CataloguePlusExternal link, you can view the available options when requesting material.
The Library will remain digitally accessible via the contact form. Students can always contact the Library with questions about the collections. If certain material is urgently needed, we will look at what is possible on a case-by-case basis.
If students know before mid-June that they need certain non-loanable books during the summer period, they can also contact the Library and we will see if we can lend the material temporarily as an exception.
The Library will remain available on all campuses. Roeterseiland (REC H) is a quiet study location in the summer, and Science Park may be a good alternative if it's closer to your home.
The creation of the new University Library in the historic heart of Amsterdam was a complex challenge. Check out "The Making of" the new UB to discover how this innovative learning environment came to life.
