Student counselling

What does student counselling look like?

  • You will be allocated a designated counsellor, who you will meet at designated times.
  • You discuss your study activities and any problems you have encountered. Together with your counsellor, you draw up a study plan.
  • The counsellor will also be able to help you if you find it difficult to talk to lecturers, study advisers or student counsellors.

Applying for student counselling

If you want to apply for student counselling, the procedure is as follows:

  • You will need a diagnosis issued by a mental health care institution, a psychologist in private practice or a psychiatrist. You can also apply if you receive outpatient treatment from a mental health care institution.
  • For more information, or to apply immediately, please send an email to studiebegeleiding-sts@uva.nlExternal link. You will then receive the necessary forms as soon as possible. After we have received all your details, we can schedule an intake interview with the psychologist. During that interview, you and the psychologist will assess whether student counseling suits your needs.
  • Please consider there is a waiting list because of the high number of applications.

Requesting a facility

The UvA offers a variety of facilities. If you want to use a facility that you are entitled to, make sure that you request it on time.

Information session ASD guidance academic year 2025-2026 (English-speaking)

For English-speaking students who want to know more before applying, the psychologists will schedule individual online appointments for (starting) UvA students with ASD and their parents and/or coaches. During this session, information will be given about study guidance, (practical) questions can be asked, and will be answered by one of the psychologists.

If you are interested in an individual information session, please send an email to studiebegeleiding-sts@uva.nlExternal link. Such appointments will most likely be scheduled during the summer of 2025.
